To enhance pedestrian safety throughout the City of Newton, crosswalks were upgraded with the installation of 15 Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) systems at key locations. These beacons provide an additional visual warning to approaching drivers, alerting them to the presence of pedestrians in adjacent crosswalks. The RRFB installations included a mix of solar-powered and AC-powered units, some sites featuring a combination of both. Two locations were equipped with three RRFB assemblies each to accommodate multiple crosswalks at a single intersection. In addition to the beacon installations, the project involved excavation, reconstruction of sidewalks and pedestrian curb ramps, conduit installation with electrical service connections, pull boxes, traffic signal foundations, and new traffic signage. This comprehensive effort reflects the city’s commitment to improving pedestrian infrastructure and roadway safety.
